Sailors capture moment as they travel through pumice field: The crew spent about six hours sailing through a massive raft of volcanic rock. One of the sailors wrote: “It was like ploughing through a field. We figured the pumice was at least six inches thick.” Other sailors in the same area described “rubble slick made up of rocks from marble to basketball size such that water was not visible”.
The floating raft emerged as a result of an underwater volcano eruption in the Pacific Ocean. It is currently drifting towards the east coast of Australia. Scientists say it could benefit the imperiled Great Barrier Reef.
