The Blacklist has suffered another setback following the exit of actress Megan Boone, as another hugely important key player for the series has departed.

In a lengthy statement posted to his Twitter, the show’s creator Jon Bokenkamp said: “I wanted to write you directly to let you know that I’ve made the difficult decision to leave The Blacklist.

“I love this show with all of my heart and it’s been an incredible journey, but after eight years I feel it’s time for me to step out of my comfort zone, try something new, and explore a few of the other characters and stories that have been crawling around in my head.”

While he admitted to having “mixed emotions” about his departure, he said that he “genuinely believe(s) the series remains full of life, creatively strong, and that bright days lie ahead”.

The announcement follows hot on the heels of the season eight finale, which saw Megan Boone’s lead character Liz Keen meet a tragic end, leaving James Spader’s Raymond Reddington as the sole lead of the show, for now at least.

“This experience, for me, has been an entire life inside of my own life,” Megan wrote in an emotional Instagram post. “These eight years playing Liz Keen have helped me better define the world and myself, as she set out to do the same.”
