The award-winning actor famous for being the voice of Marvin the Paranoid android in the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy has died aged 81

Stephen Moore first performed the role of the “manically depressed” robot with “a brain the size of a planet” in the second episode of the original radio series in 1978.

His character became one of the most popular in the series and he continued to voice the role across five radio series, a television adaptation, and in a recent stage show.

When he retired from acting the role of Marvin was taken over by Jim Broadbent in the sixth radio series last year.

He also played Kevin the teenager’s dad in seven episodes in Harry Enfield’s Television Programme.

Dr Who fans will remember him as the Silurian Eldane from season five’s Cold Blood.

He also played parts in the drama Mersey Beat and acted in stage plays at the Royal National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company.

in 1983 he was received the Laurence Olivier Theatre Award for Best Actor in a Revival, “The Doll’s House”.

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy actor Stephen Moore dies aged 81

He died last Friday and a cause of death has yet to be announced.

The news was shared on Twitter by The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galacy producer Dirk Maggs.

He tweeted: “Our dear friend Stephen Moore has died. A fine actor, a lovely man and the original and most iconic voice of Marvin The Paranoid Android in The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy.

“Our thoughts are with his family and our memories of him will always make us smile. RIP Stephen.”

David Eldridge added: “Very sad to hear Stephen Moore has died. Wonderful actor and lovely man who I was privileged to work with when Festen transferred in to the west end.

“God where do all the years go, three of that company are no longer with us. Anyway, rest in peace Stephen.”

He was married four times and leaves behind widow Noelyn George and five children.
