SPAL sound out Santon

SPAL are rivalling Real Sociedad for Davide Santon, claim Sky Sport Italia, so a sale would see Roma go for Chelsea full-back Davide Zappacosta.

According to transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio, Leonardo Semplici’s SPAL made an approach for versatile Giallorossi man Santon, who can play on either side of defence or a five-man midfield.

The 28-year-old former Inter and Newcastle United player only joined Roma last summer for €9.5m as part of the Radja Nainggolan and Nicolò Zaniolo deal.

If Santon were to join SPAL, potentially on loan with option to buy, then the Stadio Olimpico side would turn their focus towards Zappacosta.

The Italian is increasingly on the outskirts of the Chelsea squad since Frank Lampard took over from Maurizio Sarri.

Now 27, Zappacosta is not quite as versatile as Santon, as he only plays on the right flank, but was purchased from Torino for €25m in the summer of 2017 on the orders of Antonio Conte.

He has made only 52 competitive appearances for Chelsea, contributing two goals and four assists.
