Sony reveals PlayStation 5’s ‘DualSense’ controller with haptic feedback and ‘adaptive’ triggers that can adjust resistance according to different gameplay

In a surprise announcement Sony unveiled a new and improved controller that will come with its next-generation PlayStation 5 console.

The ‘DualSense’ controller will feature several additional features not found in the current PlayStation generations’ Dual Shock 4.

Those include a haptic feedback system that will replace ‘rumble’ technology. Sony says this system will offer even more intricacy and ‘immersion’ for players by expanding upon the type of vibrations possible.

Sony has tweaked the design of of its next-generation controller, dubbing it the ‘DualSense.’ (pictured). The gaming titan unveiled the controller on Tuesday by surprise 

‘This adds a variety of powerful sensations you’ll feel when you play, such as the slow grittiness of driving a car through mud,’ wrote Sony in a blog post.

Additionally, it will introduce ‘adaptive triggers’ in the L2 and R2 buttons that can change their resistance depending on the type of action being performed in a game.

‘We also incorporated adaptive triggers into the L2 and R2 buttons of DualSense so you can truly feel the tension of your actions, like when drawing a bow to shoot an arrow,’ explained Sony.

Sony says that it has also renamed its ‘share’ button that allows users to share clips of their games with other in the PlayStation community, to the ‘create’ button. 

While it offered little detail on exactly how that will change the experience for gamers, it said that details will be available in the year ahead. 

‘With Create, we’re once again pioneering new ways for players to create epic gameplay content to share with the world, or just to enjoy for themselves. We’ll have more details on this feature as we get closer to launch,’ wrote Sony.    

Details of the next-generation controller come about a month after Sony detailed its PS5 hardware In an online event on for the the first time.

Among those specs hardware specs in the upcoming console are an eight-core AMD Zen 2 CPU which is capable of 3.5GHz and a custom GPU based on AMD’s RDNA 2 architecture that is capable of 10 teraflops.
