Service chiefs: Ohanaeze Ndigbo chides Buhari for ignoring southeast again

The apex Igbo organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo has decried the exclusion of southeast military personnel in the recent service chiefs appointment by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The socio-cultural group made its stance known in a statement by its national publicity secretary, Alex Ogbonnia, and seen by Legit.ng.

Quoting the president-general of Ohanaeze, George Obiozor, the statement said:

“One way of ensuring compliance with the federal character provision of the Nigerian constitution is to observe the distribution of important and vital offices of the federal government in accordance with the zonal structure.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo hopes and believes that Mr. President in continuation of appointments in this sector would consider the southeast zone.”

Meanwhile, Delta state governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, has congratulated Major-General Irabor on his appointment as Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff (CDS).

In a statement sent to Legit.ng by his spokesman, Mr. Olisa Ifeajika, Okowa said that the sacrifices of the new Defence chief towards peace and progress of the nation, especially his acknowledged gallantry at assignments, were outstanding.

He thanked Buhari for appointing an illustrious son of Delta state into the exalted position of CDS, and said that it was an elevated responsibility given to a deserving officer.

In a related development, the Coalition of Civil Society Groups for Good Governance and Transparency (CCSGGGT) on Wednesday, January 27, called on President Buhari to honour the outgoing service chiefs with meritorious awards.

A statement signed by the group’s conveners, Emmanuel Ogar and Abubakar Gana, and seen by Legit.ng said the chiefs should be given the award of the Grand Commander of the Order of Niger (GCON).

Another group, National Democratic Front (NDF) called on the immediate past service chiefs to ensure that they make themselves available for consultations by their successors.

The group said the past service chiefs’ wealth of experience can be used by their new colleagues in ending the war against terrorism in Nigeria.

A statement signed by NDF’s secretary-general, Bolaji Abudlkadir, and seen by Legit.ng applauded the numerous efforts and sacrifices made by the outgoing service chiefs.
