Lawmakers on Tuesday called for a probe of funds appropriated for the prosecution of war against insurgency.

This follows the gruesome murder of 43 rice farmers in Zabarmari, Jere Local Government Area of Borno State on Saturday, which triggered outrage in the Senate

Debating the matter during the plenary, many Senators insisted on the sack of Service Chiefs as a way out of the insecurity.

In a motion which was sponsored by Senator Kashim Shettima representing Borno Central Senatorial district titled: “Beheading of 67 farmers in Borno by Boko Haram insurgents: Need for urgent decisive action”, lawmakers resolved that security heads should be replaced immediately.

Shettima in the motion maintained that last Saturday’s killings were the fifth mass ugly incident this year.

He said: “Observes that this attack is one of the major attacks perpetrated by this devilish group in addition to the February in Auno that killed 40 people, the assault in Forum Kolo am village of Guber that killed almost 100 civilians in June last year, while another attack in Usman Lawanti left another 40 dead.

In his contribution, Chairman of Senate Committee on Army Ali Ndume said he has personally gone through military formation in the troubled Northeast and discovered that soldiers don’t have new weapons to combat the insurgency.

According to him, the number of weapons were grossly inadequate to the extent that they use weapons turn by turn.

He further lamented that it was security agents who would impress on the family of kidnapped victims to negotiate with kidnappers, a situation he said casts damnation on President Muhammadu Buhari led government.

Meanwhile, in the adopted resolution after some Senators vented anger on Nigerian military’s lack of capacity to curtail insurgency, lawmakers called for a probe of funds appropriated for the prosecution of war against insurgency.

“Urge the President to immediately initiate a probe into widespread allegations of corruption within the security structure.

In his remarks, Senate President, Dr Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan condemned the killing of rice farmers, saying that the Senate would follow up all resolutions passed in the past with the aim of tackling insecurity in Nigeria.
