The moon, or supermoon, is seen rising behind the Soyuz rocket at the Baikonur Cosmodrome launch pad in Kazakhstan, Monday, Nov. 14, 2016. NASA/Bill IngallsNASAThe Super Worm Moon will light up the sky tonight. The last full moon of the winter will officially peak Monday, March 9 at 1:48 p.m. but will appear full Sunday night (Marcy 8). According to NASA, the moon’s unique name comes from Native American tradition. In addition to Worm Moon, the March full moon is known as the Sap Moon, Crow Moon, Crust Moon, Sugar Moon and Lenten Moon. According to the Farmer’s Almanac, the native tribe of what is now the northern and eastern U.S. named the March full moon the Worm Moon after the earthworm casts that appear as the ground thaws. The northern tribes called the moon the Crow Moon, a name that comes from the cawing of crows signaling the end of winter. Other northern names are the Crust Moon, because the snow cover becomes crusted from thawing by day and freezing at night, or the Sap Moon as this is the time for tapping maple trees. Europeans call this the Lenten Moon as it corresponds with Lent, and the next full moon, the first full moon in spring, occurs just before Easter.March’s full moon is a supermoon, or one that occurs when the moon is closest to the Earth in its elliptical orbit. Two other supermoons will occur this year – in April and May.Note to readers: if you purchase something through one of our affiliate links we may earn a commission.
