Real Madrid midfielder Marco Asensio has admitted that he was close to joining rivals Barcelona in 2015.

The Spaniard joined Los Blancos in a six year deal worth €3.9 million from Real Mallorca in 2015 having already agreed a deal with them in December 2014.

However, while speaking ahead of this weekend’s El Clasico, the winger said he could have signed for the Catalans according to Daily Mail.

Asensio has gone ahead to score 30 goals and 30 assists in 149 appearances across competitions for the Spanish League champions since he joined them. He told AS during an interview:

Yes, I could have, but also other clubs. “There are always great clubs interested who ask about your situation.

When I signed for Madrid it was all very fast, the treatment was spectacular and they showed incredible interest. When that opportunity presents itself it is impossible to say no.”

The 24-year-old also hinted that his move to Real was inspired by 20 Grand Slam winner Rafael Nadal, who is a staunch supporter of the Galacticos himself. He added:

“Rafa really likes football and Madrid. His uncle was part of the sports direction at Mallorca. There is a very good kid who has to play for Madrid”. It was me and that’s how it started.”

The Spanish national team player endured series of injury last campaign and that stopped him shining in their La Liga triumph. He is however working his way back into Zinedine Zidane’s plans.

Asensio has featured in all of Madrid’s last four matches and will likely play some part in Saturday’s crunch clash with arch-rivals Barcelona.

Legit.ng earlier reported that Zinedine Zidane might be shown the exit doors if Real Madrid fails to turnaround their poor results in recent times.

Los Blancos suffered back-to-back defeats to Cadiz and Dynamo Kyiv within the space of four days in the La Liga and Champions League.

The Spanish League champions were handed a 1-0 defeat by Alvaro Cervera’s men before the Ukrainian outfit defeated them in the opening game of their UCL clash in the same venue.
