President Muhammadu Buhari has warmly welcomed the inauguration of Joe Biden and Senator Kamala Harris as president and vice president of the United States respectively on Wednesday, January 20.

The Nigerian leader expressed hope that their presidency will mark a strong point of cooperation and support for Nigeria as well as the African continent.

Buhari said this in a statement released by his senior special assistant on media and publicity, Garba Shehu, on Wednesday.

President Buhari congratulated the US leaders and the entire country on the successful transition.

He noted that that transition marks an important historical inflection point for democracy as a system of government and for the global community as a whole.

His words:

“We look forward to the Biden presidency with great hope and optimism for strengthening of existing cordial relationships, working together to tackle global terrorism, climate change, poverty and improvement of economic ties and expansion of trade.

“We hope that this will be an era of great positivity between our two nations, as we jointly address issues of mutual interest.”

Shehu said President Buhari and all Nigerians rejoice with Biden and shared the proud feeling that the first woman elected vice president of the US has an African and Asian ancestry.

In another related report, a former US president, Barack Obama, has congratulated Biden as he was inaugurated as the 46th president of the US.

Obama in a congratulatory tweet on Wednesday, January 20, described Biden as his friend.

The former president also said it was Biden’s time. Obama accompanied the tweet with a photo of him and the holding each other.
