For the publication of her photography book Hold Still, Kate called Ceri Edwards, a woman in South Wales whose photo of her daughter and husband was selected for the exhibition and book. As they discussed how much they love to photograph their families, Kate admitted that her children (who, to be fair, are generally photographed more often than your average tots), aren’t always amenable. “Everyone’s like, ‘Mummy, please stop taking photographs!'” Kate laughed during a recorded phone call. Many of her photos have been shared on her Instagram account, including the portraits she takes of her children for each of their birthdays.

Last year, Kate began the Hold Still photography project with the National Portrait Gallery to encourage those in the UK to document their experiences during the pandemic. In the statement released by the royal family, it specified that, for the project’s contest, “images will be assessed based on the emotion and experience they convey rather than the photographic quality, and entries can be captured on a phone or camera.”
The portraits were shared in a digital exhibition and are now available as a book. In talking with Edwards, Kate thanked her for sharing an intimate portrait with the world. “These simple moments between loved ones really impacted everyone, actually, and has resonated with people across the country. So thank you for sharing your photograph and your story.”
