Pioli feels 'as if I've always been here'

Stefano Pioli has admitted it took him “one day” to feel at home at Milan and has pointed out that he is trying to shape “a very young team”.

The coach was appointed on October 9 and replaced Marco Giampaolo at the helm of the Rossoneri, and he claims he expected a situation much worse than the one he was presented.

“I expected a critical situation, but I immediately found a great availability from the players, a compact environment and I was straight away inside a project,” he told the Gazzetta dello Sport. “I also told my collaborators; after one day, it felt like I had always been here.”

After four games unbeaten since late November, Atalanta handed Milan a nightmare end to 2019 and Pioli is adamant the team will “bounce back” from the 5-0 defeat to the Dea.

“It’s a very young team, with all the pros and cons of the youth. They were still looking for their identity. I am working to define it,” he added. “Bergamo was a setback, but we want to bounce back, to show everyone that we are not those ones from Bergamo.

“We must learn from our mistakes and be able to carry this scar, because even the negative memories can be transformed into an opportunity.”

Milan return to action against Sampdoria on Monday, when they return from the break at 11th in Serie A.
