A video circulated after the Phoenix Suns’ lost Game 6 of the NBA Finals on Tuesday night of coach Monty Williams congratulating the Milwaukee Bucks in their locker room.
In the video, Williams is heard saying, “I just wanted to come and congratulate you guys as a man and coach,” Williams said. “You guys deserved it. I’m thankful for the experience. You guys made me a better coach. You made us a better team. Congratulations.”
NBA writers flooded social media and wrote a lot of stories about Williams’ visit and his comments after it occurred, with many writing something about how “classy” the move was.
But not everyone evidently agreed.
Amin Elhassan, a former Suns executive and a former ESPN analyst, blasted the Suns coach for the visit to the opposing locker room on the Rich Eisen Show.
“Let me just start by saying Monty Williams is an excellent human being,” Elhassan, now with Meadowlark Media, said. “He is literally one of the best among us, a genuinely good guy who is well liked and treats everybody respectfully and treats his job respectfully. A very good coach. I thought he did an awesome job with this team not just this year, but last year. I thought he did an awesome job in these finals, it’s hard to stop something like Giannis. I wish nothing but the best for Monty.”

Elhassan then questioned the timing of Williams’ going into the Bucks’ locker room.
“Having said that, I felt it was a little too ‘Look at me Louie’ out there,” he told Ben Lyons of the Rich Eisen Show. “I mean you’re gonna walk into the winner’s locker room in the middle of their championship celebration, make them pause the celebration to say a big speech about how you’ve made us a better coach and how you’ve made us a better team. Come on.”
Elhassan wasn’t finished.
He continued: “If you are that empathetic where you know hey, even in this moment of defeat I gain a kernel of victory by having faced this formidable foe, then you are empathetic enough to know I’ll just wait until I catch them in the hallway.”
When it was mentioned by Lyons that Giannis might have asked Monty Williams to come in, Elhassan replied, “He came to their locker room, he’s not going to usher him from the visitor’s locker room. He saw him in the doorway and was like ‘hey, come in man.’ There’s a big difference there … Again, if it were anyone else by Monty I feel like a lot of people would be on my side on this one. I get it, I’m not popular anyway. I’m OK with taking the unpopular stance which is I was a little bit, man, let them have their moment. “
Elhassan’s comments didn’t go over too well with many on social media.
