A “Peeping Tom” brutally murdered a mum so he could sexually abused her daughter during a terrifying 18-hour attack that ended with his chilling call to police.
“Evil” Joseph William Borton bludgeoned the 52-year-old woman and her 12-year-old child with a mallet when he broke into a home in an affluent suburb.
He sexually assaulted the severely injured girl, whose skull was caved in from the blows, as her mother lay dying nearby, a court heard.
The mum, whose skull was shattered, survived for several hours and her daughter was in and out of consciousness as she was repeatedly attacked by Borton.
A court heard sickening details about the incident – which the girl miraculously survived – including the moment Borton sat naked next to her on a bed and told her: “Let’s play.”
The girl heard her mother’s groans before she died hours after being attacked.
He had indecently assaulted the mum by removing some of her clothes.
Borton, 31, admitted murder and was jailed for life on Friday with a minimum term of 19 years.
The killer, who had previously met his victims, also admitted sex crimes against the girl and was given an open-ended jail term of preventive detention.
The mother cannot be named to protect her daughter’s identity.
After Borton was jailed, the woman’s grieving husband called him an “evil” killer.
The mum and daughter were visiting a house in Karori, a suburb of Wellington, New Zealand, to do laundry while the owners were away, Stuff reported.

Borton, who lives nearby, was watching them through the windows and used a mallet he had taken earlier from another neighbour’s house.
When he entered the home he began hitting the girl with the mallet, knocking her unconscious.
Her mother came to help, but she was hit repeatedly with the weapon.
As she lay dying on the floor, Borton sexually assaulted her daughter, whose hearing and eyesight were damaged.
Her fractured skull later had to be reconstructed during surgery.
At one point, Borton tried to wash the blood off the victims’ head.
The attack finally ended when Borton called police on April 5, described himself as a “Peeping Tom” and told officers he had killed the mother, the High Court in Wellington was told.
He told police he wanted to incapacitate the mother so he could abuse the girl.
Mental health experts who assessed him afterwards believed he had sick sexual fantasies.
He was living in a garden shed at the time of the attack and was dabbling in online currency trading.
Following his arrest, police discovered that he had been stalking a young woman in the neighbourhood and taking photos of her through a window.
He stole her dressing gown and a school blazer, and took a photo of his penis with the blazer in the background.
In a statement released after the hearing, the murdered woman’s devastated husband said: “The crimes that occurred to our family were horrific. What happened to my daughter was a horrendous crime but the murder of my wife is numbingly awful.
“My daughter is still recovering and miraculously the prognosis is good.”
He added: “We live in a wonderful society and the crimes that were committed on my wife and daughter are by far the exception.
“The perpetrator is evil. It’s not how we see our society.”
