Pastor Tunde Bakare of the Citadel Global Community Church, has revealed the names of three southerners contacted to be vice presidential candidates to Muhammadu Buhari when he sought for elections previously.

According to him, Oby Ezekwesili, who once served as a minister under President Olusegun Obasanjo, Otunba Niyi Adebayo, a current minister and former governor, as well as Jimi Agbaje, a governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos, were contacted.

Bakare, who also narrated how Enoch Adeboye, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, came into the picture, said while two of the people were turned down, the third person rejected the offer.

Daily Trust, which quotes the Green White Green online news medium, said Bakare made the revelations during his 66th birthday.

He said he was out of the country when he was contacted to help with a VP material for Buhari. He said he was excited about the communication and that he gave ‘them’ Jimi Agbaje.

He said he also took Agbaje to Abuja for discussions. However, ‘something’, which he did not explain, happened and the latter was dropped.

Bakare said after he was called again, he then settled for Ezekwesili, went to Adeboye to urge him to assist with making the woman positively inclined to take the position.

“I went to Pastor Adeboye to give me Oby Ezekwesili and I called her to run with President Buhari, but she refused.

But Pastor Adeboye told me that he (Buhari) would need a strong Christian to be his running mate. I said to him that Oby was strong too.

He said no, that she must not leave certainty for uncertainty because she was working at the World Bank then.

He said he then sent for Adebayo, who is currently the trade and industry minister, asking him to take the offer.

He was later endorsed by Adeboye to be the running mate to Buhari after the three options had been explored.

However, before he became the running mate to Buhari on the platform of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), he said the national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, had contacted him, through Lai Mohammed, to prevail on the former military leader to run on the platform of the Action Congress (AC).

He also revealed that Buhari had wanted Tinubu, who he called the greatest grassroots mobilier in the southwest, to be his running mate. Bakare said he told Buhari that it would be hard for him to broker a Muslim-Muslim ticket.

Legit.ng earlier reported how Buhari, ahead of the 2015 general elections, chose Professor Yemi Osinbajo as his running mate in the 2015 presidential election.

Osinbajo remained his running mate in the 2019 election which he also won.
