A nurse found dead in her car submerged in a river has been called “the best daughter anyone could have” by her grief-stricken parents.

Laurie Jones, 23, was almost home when her VW Beetle left the road and plunged into a river near Wyllie, Wales, in the early hours of October 1.

Her father Simon revealed the cause of her death is still unknown said her family are still trying to come to terms with her tragic death.

He added she was “confident” driver and had done the 15-mile trip back from the University Hospital of Wales (UHW) in Cardiff hundreds of times before.

He told WalesOnline : “We just don’t know what happened – we are waiting to find out.

“She was the most caring girl in the world – all she wanted to do was go to work and care for people.

The graduate failed to return home after her shift

“She was the best daughter anyone could have.”

After passing A-levels in chemistry, biology, and maths Laurie went to Bucks New University in Uxbridge to study child nursing, funding the course herself.

She started at UHW in January after turning down a job at London’s Great Ormond Street where she had trained for 18 months.

Laurie was a home-loving girl and had just enjoyed a week’s leave Christmas shopping and having Sunday lunch with her family.

She was also planning the celebrations for her mother’s 50th birthday next year.

Laurie had spent time in Africa and India which inspired her to specialise in tropical diseases in the future.

She switched her rota on Monday to do the 1pm to 1am shift, the busiest time in the Accident and Emergency paediatric unit.

Her heartbroken mother Jo, a district nurse, said: “She was used to the shift patterns but they were always 12 hours.

“Her only worry was that she would sleep all day on Tuesday and then not be able to sleep that night before going in for 12-hour shifts on Wednesday and Thursday.”

Laurie was last seen leaving the hospital still wearing her blue scrubs and carrying a pink holdall and matching water bottle.

Her mother said: “I left the lamp on for her in the hallway and it was still on when I got up at 5.30am. I assumed she was tied up in work but when she didn’t arrive home I started texting her with no response.”

Laurie was listed as missing person on Tuesday morning hours before her white VW was found in the River Sirhowy, a mile from her home in Pontllanfraith.

Laurie loved Harry Potter, Disney characters and butterflies and her family took her to the Wye Valley Butterfly Zoo in Symonds Yat for her birthday.

Police are investigating the cause of the accident but say there are no suspicious circumstances.

An inquest will be opened in due course.
