Young children whose mothers took paracetamol when they were pregnant are more likely to have hyperactivity and attention issues, a study suggests.

The problems were no longer apparent by the time the children finished primary school and the study could not prove that paracetamol caused them. However, the researchers advised women to use it with caution.

Jean Golding, of Bristol University, who led the study, said: “Our findings add to a series of results concerning evidence of the possible adverse effects of taking paracetamol during pregnancy, such as issues with asthma or behaviour in the offspring. It reinforces the advice that women should be cautious when taking medication during pregnancy and to seek medical advice where necessary.”
