Osun govt warns Ife Iron and Steel melting factory over illicit practice

The Osun State Government has directed the management of Ife Iron and Steel Melting Factory to embark on immediate corrective measures of all observed anomalies arising from unfriendly environmental practices that could put the health of the people in jeopardy.

The company was also warned on the need to provide a quick solution to the incessant problems associated with emission by ensuring containment to permissible level in line with World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines.

The State’s Commissioner for Environment and Sanitation, Hon. Sola Oladepo and the Director-General, Bureau of Social Services (BOSS) Richard Tinubu, separately gave the warnings when paid an unscheduled visit to the company in Ile Ife.

The commissioner, who was in the factory to observe the level of compliance with extant regulations and standards on environmental protection and sustainability by the company, stressed the need for the company to provide quick solution to the incessant problems associated with emission by ensuring containment to permissible level in line with WHO guidelines.

While addressing the management team of the company, the Director-General of BOSS emphasised that the Osun State Government is critically concerned about the challenges of emission and other sundry complaints of the people of Ife Communities where the factory is sited.

Tinubu, therefore, emphasized the need for the company to carry out the government’s directive on all observed anomalies, warning that failure to do so would attract necessary disciplinary measures.

The Director-General of BOSS, meanwhile, directed the company to submit its corrective plans to the state government with immediate effects for effective monitoring and enforcement.

The Head, Admin and Human Resource Services of the Company, Mr. Sola Adeleke, in his reaction assured that the company is already working on expanding its emission protection abatement facilities to guarantee total compliance with emission protection.
