Fans keep requesting one particular song to be included on the Guardians of the Galaxy soundtracks, but James Gunn says it’s too “hackneyed.”

James Gunn has revealed the one song he will never use in a Guardians of the Galaxy movie. The two films so far in the series have been loaded with hits from the ’60s and ’70s, such as Blue Swede’s “Hooked on a Feeling,” The Runaways’ “Cherry Bomb,” and Cheap Trick’s “Surrender.” The first movie’s soundtrack was the best selling soundtrack of all time to not feature a single original song for the film — as well as the third bestselling vinyl of the 2010s — with the soundtrack for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 receiving a Grammy nomination for Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media.

The Guardians series surrounds the Earth-born Peter Quill (AKA Star-Lord, played by Chris Pratt) adventuring through the stars with his Walkman and cassettes gifted by his late mom. Throughout the carnage brought by Lee Pace’s Ronan the Accuser or Kurt Russell’s Ego, is a delightful mix of juxtaposing and killer songs. This includes a hearty discussion between Peter and his father that Looking Glass’ “Brandy (You’re A Fine Girl)” is one of the greatest songs ever before epicly battling one another to Fleetwood Mac’s “The Chain.”

Gunn revealed in an Instagram story that the one song everyone keeps requesting for a Guardians soundtrack is “Dancing in the Moonlight” — and that it isn’t going to happen. For Gunn, the 1972 song is “hackneyed” and too on-the-nose. Gunn has long stated this in interviews, though it hasn’t seemed to dispel any fans from making yet another advocation for its inclusion. The director regularly likes to respond to fan questions about the series, including hints at upcoming soundtracks or why Drax is gray and not green. Check out his response below:

Gunn’s input on soundtracks have been highly respected by the rest of the MCU, with Gunn recommending The Spinners’ “The Rubberband Man” for the Avengers: Infinity War soundtrack. For the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Gunn announced he’d finished the soundtrack in May of 2021, well before the beginning of shooting at the end of the year. Guardians 3 was expected to release in 2020 but had been delayed to 2023 after both the COVID-19 pandemic and the fact that Gunn was fired in 2018 for unearthed tweets joking about child molestation — before being rehired again by Disney and Marvel.

Given that the magic of the Guardians of the Galaxy songs comes from how well they seemingly don’t fit into a space stage, “Dancing in the Moonlight” has too much interstellar energy to hit that sweet spot. While David Bowie’s “Moonage Daydream” and Norman Greenbaum’s “Spirit In The Sky,” were both in Guardians soundtracks, the specific inclusion of dancing for Star-Lord is low-hanging fruit for Gunn. As the third and potentially final film in the franchise approaches, Gunn has assured fans that the soundtrack choices remain in capable hands.
