Ohanaeze Ndigbo has reacted to the death of Senator Obi Onyeabo and Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu (retd), with the socio-political association describing the death of the prominent Nigerians as shocking.

Kanu, a former military governor of Lagos and Imo, died in the morning of Wednesday, January 13, according to one of his close allies, Joe Okei-Odumakin.

Although the cause of his death was not revealed, the late former governor was reported to have died in his home.

Kanu was known to have joined the pro-democracy movement, NADECO, and was instrumental to the agitation that actualised the cancellation of the June 12 presidential election in 1993, The Nation reports.

On the other hands, Senator Onyeabo, an international business lawyer, died at the age of 86.

He attended St Cyprian’s School, Port Harcourt, between 1943-50. He proceeded to Hope Waddell Training Institution, Calabar between 1951-55.

According to Nigerian Lawyer, he attended North-Western Polytechnic, London, 1958-59; London School of Economics and Political Science, University of London, 1959-62.

In 1961, he was called to the English Bar at Gray’s Inn. Meanwhile, he served as the Legal Adviser to the Military Governor of Eastern Nigeria between January and September 1966.

Reacting to the loss through a statement by its publicity secretary Chiedozie Ogbonnia, Ohanaeze said it was shocked by the death of the Second Republic senator who held the traditional title of Ose Oji Nnewi.

Meanwhile, Usman Faruk, first military governor of the northwestern state, passed on, plunging the people of Gombe into mourning.

The former military governor died on Friday, December 18, 2020. He served as the northwestern state military governor from 1967 to 1975 after it was split off from the old northern region during the military regime of General Yakubu Gowon.

Reacting to his demise, President Muhammadu Buhari described Faruq as an upright patriot who dedicated his life to the unity of the nation.
