Ogun Police to cult groups: shelve planned meeting

The Ogun State Police Command on Friday warned an unnamed strange cult groups to shelve their planned meeting Saturday, August 8, in parts of the state, as the security agencies were poised to counter them with full force.

The Command said that intelligence gathered had revealed that members of various unlawful cult groups were planning to mark what they called “8/8”; being the 8th of August 2020, in manners likely to lead to bloodletting and wanton destruction of properties.

The Police Public Relations Officer for the Command, Abimbola Oyeyemi, who made this known in a release, advised the group to have a rethink and retrace their steps.

Abimbola, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) noted that the command’s tactical squads namely SARS, anti cultists, anti kidnapping as well as the Divisional Police Officers and Area Commanders have been put on red alert to checkmate any act capable of undermining the security of the state.

According to him, the full weight of the law would be applied on any member of unlawful societies who intends to use public places to perpetrate evil.

The Police Spokesman added that the Command would not fold its hand while some misguided and unscrupulous elements attempt to make life difficult for law abiding citizens and residents of the State.

He also appealed to parents and guardians to rein in their wards and steer them clear of any unlawful gathering or society on, before and after the said date.

Hoteliers are also warned not to allow their facilities be used for any cult-related gathering as owners of such facilities would be liable for prosecution.

While assuring members of the public to go about their lawful businesses without fear of harassment, intimidation and molestation, Abimbola said the command has rolled out tools in its arsenal to deal decisively with anybody who tries to breach the relative peace being enjoying by the good people of the state
