Nigerian gold medalist at Atlanta 1996 Olympics Games Chioma Ajunwa has got the blessing of former President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo in her quest to float a sporting foundation.
Ajunwa, an assistant commissioner of police, is the founder of Chioma Ajunwa Foundation, which seeks to encourage youth participation in sports as a way of discouraging crime.
The 50-year-old who spoke shortly after visiting the former President at his Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) Pent House residence said she got the support and blessing of the elder statesman during the visit.
She disclosed this while speaking with newsmen and expressed concern that youths have developed nerves for criminality rather than embracing sports.This triggered her decision to change the trend.
Anjuwa maintained that criminality among youths can be curbed if they embrace sports.

In her words: “The way things are going in our nation, our youths instead of embracing sports or going to learn hand work, are going into crime.
“They want to make it in a hurry. I now said what can I do for my country? I will use my name to draw all the youths out of crime, telling them that ‘if I, Chioma Ajunwa, from no background can make it through sports, they can make it too.
“That’s why we have come to tell our daddy that this is what we want to do, and we need his blessing.”
Anjuwa further disclosed that her request was granted, as former President Obasanjo, agreed to support the foundation and assist in whatever capacity to draw the who-is-who in country to ensure that the foundation is a success.
Earlier, Legit.ng reported that Team Nigeria missed out in the World Athletics relays that was billed for Poland from May 1 to 2, 2021.
The Athletics Federation of Nigeria confirmed the development in their correspondence to media houses on Thursday, April 29.
Factional president of the AFN Ibrahim Shehu-Gusau accused the sports ministry in his statement titled ‘Sports ministry scuttles Nigeria’s World Relays participation’.
However, the special adviser to the sports minister Sunday Dare on media matters John Akanji distanced the ministry and the minister from the claims.
Akanji who revealed that the athletes were denied visas by the US embassy also questions the presidency of Shehu-Gusau, saying he is not the recognised leader of the AFN.
