New York prosecutors reportedly subpoena for Trump’s tax returns

New York state prosecutors have subpoenaed President Trump’s accounting firm for eight years of his personal and corporate tax returns.

The Manhattan district attorney’s office delivered the subpoena last month to the accounting firm Mazars USA after the district attorney opened a criminal investigation into a hush-money payment Trump made to porn star Stormy Daniels, according to the New York Times.

The subpoena demands the firm turn over federal and state tax returns dating back to 2011. The Manhattan district attorney’s office is focused mainly on the $130,000 payment between Trump and Daniels, facilitated by Trump’s former attorney Michael Cohen.

Cohen was sentenced last year to three years in federal prison for breaking federal campaign finance laws.

Trump’s own legal team has fought off and delayed attempts by Democrats to access his tax returns. He sued to block a New York law, passed this year, that would have empowered state lawmakers to seize his tax returns.

Trump delay tactics have proven effective at likely putting off the public release of his tax returns until after the 2020 election.
