It was game, set and smash for Andy Murray’s gold postbox yesterday after a car knocked it over.

Locals in his home town of Dunblane in Perthshire quickly shared photos of the unfortunate sight of the toppled cast-iron structure.

It was painted gold in 2012 to honour Sir Andy’s victory over Roger Federer in the men’s singles final at the London Olympics. Such was its fame that it featured in an edition of Monopoly.

A Royal Mail spokesman said: ‘We’re aware that the Andy Murray gold postbox has been knocked down and will look to reinstate it as soon as possible’

A female driver ‘rolled back and knocked the postbox out’, according to one witness

The winners of the other 28 gold medals for Team GB in the Olympics also received the honour of a painted postbox in their home towns.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: ‘Police in Forth Valley attended at Dunblane High Street at around 7.50pm on Monday July 22 following a report of a low-speed collision where a Mercedes car struck a Royal Mail postbox.

‘The female driver sustained a minor injury but didn’t require medical attention. Inquiries are ongoing.’
