Master P sent some encouraging words to No Limit signee McKinley “Mac” Phipps after it was announced that he was granted parole.
“Welcome home soldier!” he wrote alongside a photo of Mac. “@macphippsofficial Let God guide you on this next chapter.”
As REVOLT previously reported, Mac was found guilty for the murder of 19-year-old Barron C Victor Jr. — who was fatally shot during his Louisiana show — and sentenced to 30 years in prison despite a lack of evidence and admissions from his bodyguard, who claimed to be the gunman. He has long claimed he was wrongfully convicted, but in 2015, his fight for justice was brought to national attention when witnesses who initially identified the rapper as the shooter recanted their statements, noting authorities forced them into making their previous testimonies.
Mac’s first attempt at getting his sentence commuted failed, but in April, Governor John Bel Edwards granted him clemency. Yesterday (June 22), he made even more headway in his fight for freedom when he received immediate parole following a unanimous vote by the Louisiana Board of Pardons and Committee.
Amid the announcement, he was praised for mentoring young inmates amid his time in prison and pursuing a vocational education that earned him a certification in air conditioning and heating, and a work-release job at a shipyard in Lafourche Parish.
His parole conditions were also revealed. According to the terms, Mac has a 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. curfew and is required to stay away from establishments with alcohol; he must also do six hours of community service with at-risk youth monthly. His official release date has not yet been announced.
Though Master P is happy to know to hear the news about Mac, another No Limit star is hoping to get his freedom. P’s brother C-Murder has been serving a life sentence in connection with the murder of 16-year-old Steve Thomas. He has continued to maintain his innocence.
