Mariah Carey makes chart history again — this time for dropping off completely

There’s no record Mariah Carey won’t break — even if it’s not the most flattering one.
No one is experiencing post-holiday blues quite like the queen of Christmas, who continues her streak of breaking records into the new year as her perennial holiday hit “All I Want for Christmas Is You” becomes the first song in Billboard Hot 100 history to fall completely off the chart from the No. 1 spot.

Billboard confirmed the news Monday, indicating that all five Christmas-themed singles that had re-entered the chart’s top 10 (a weekly record since the chart’s inception) had departed the Hot 100. The news comes one year after Carey set the previous record for a Hot 100 drop-off when “All I Want for Christmas Is You” exited the chart from its previous peak position of No. 3.

In Carey’s absence, rapper Post Malone’s “Circles” returns to the No. 1 position for a third overall week atop the chart.
Prior to leaving the weekly ranking, “All I Want for Christmas Is You” (originally released in 1994) gave Carey her 19th Hot 100 chart-topper in the U.S., making her the solo act with the most No. 1s in history. When the song held the No. 1 slot for the Billboard ranking dated Jan. 4, Carey also became the first artist in history to score a No. 1 single on the Billboard Hot 100 in four separate decades (the ’90s, the ’00s, the ’10s, and the ’20s).

“When it first came out, it was more of a gradual thing,” Carey previously told EW about the track’s success. “It was popular, but it didn’t have what it has now. I feel like people have grown up with the song and it’s become a part of people’s lives in terms of the way they celebrate the holidays. That makes me feel really proud as someone that loves Christmas so much.”
