Mancini on Italy reunion with Vialli

Roberto Mancini said Gianluca Vialli returns to the Italy squad because together they “want to achieve what we should’ve won as players.”

The Azzurri will qualify for Euro 2020 with three games to spare if they beat Greece this evening at the Stadio Olimpico.

In the build-up to the match, Vialli accompanied the squad and FIGC representatives to the children’s hospital in Rome, ready to take on a new role as chief delegate of the Italy camp.

“We were a little unlucky with the Nazionale, as it was a really strong squad, probably the best in the world at that point, yet we were unable to win the World Cup or the Euros.

“The hope is that we can achieve what we should’ve won as players. We want to take Italy back to where this nation belongs, which is among the favourites for every tournament. We can also do it in a different style to the teams of the past.”

Vialli and his former Sampdoria teammate Sinisa Mihajlovic are both undergoing treatment for serious illnesses, so there was an emotional reunion at the Coverciano training ground yesterday.

“It was lovely to see Luca after a long time and the players were also happy. We received a visit from Sinisa and he seemed fairly well too.

“We visited the children in the hospital, and must all learn from their strength in battling against the problems that life throws at you, always with a smile and a fighting spirit.”
