Man United hero Robin van Persie has defended the club’s penalty record this season.

United have been awarded 21 penalties so far this season, with their last coming in their slim 1-0 win over FC Copenhagen.

The Red Devils appeared to struggle to break a stubborn Copenhagen side during their Europa League quarter final fixture played in Cologne.

The match ended in a barren draw after regulation time, only for referee Clement Turpin to point to the spot to gift United a penalty scored by Bruno Fernandes.

Previously, the Red Devils had won 14 penalties in the Premier League this season, a historic record in the English top-flight.

The record has seen rival fans troll United as ‘Penchester’, with some labelling the club as ‘VARchester’ in relation to the number of times VAR technology has awarded them penalties.

However, Van Persie has jumped into the defence of his former side, pointing out “it’s a good thing.”

According to the retired striker, the record proves Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men have been lethal and threatening upfront.

“If you get 21 penalties in a season, it shows you that you’re attacking a lot,” the ex-United striker told 90min.

“Maybe a couple of them could or could not be a penalty, maybe a little bit tricky, but even then you’re attacking and in a situation where the referee can give a penalty. I think it’s a good thing that they’re getting so many,” he added.

“Bruno Fernandes has his very own unique style of taking them, but what I like is that he mixes it up,” he noted.

Van Persie further hailed new arrival Fernandes who has been integral in converting penalties awarded to Man United.
