Solskjaer missed out on his first silverware as Manchester United boss as his side lost in a dramatic penalty shootout to Villareal on Wednesday, May 26.

There were a few positives to take from the season, United managed a second-place finish in the league.

Early reports now claim Solskjaer will be handed a new three-year deal, with the Manchester United bosses ready to open the war chest to back the gaffer up financially in the transfer market.

According to The Guardian, Solskjaer wants to reinforce his squad in all departments which would mean getting a defender, midfielder, winger and striker.

The newspaper further claims that United already has four candidates on their wishlist:

Defence: Pau Torres

The Villareal centre back has been linked with a move away from the yellow submarine and United got to see him in action first hand in the Europa League final.

He has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League, and Manchester United is his most likely destination

Midfield: Declan Rice

The West Ham defensive midfielder got a call up to Gareth Southgate’s England squad which was a clear indication of his overall quality as a player.

While the Hammers qualified for the Europa League, they might find it difficult to keep hold of Rice, who is wanted by several top clubs in England.

Winger: Jadon Sancho

The 21-year old was heavily linked to United last summer, but Dortmund remained firm in their initial £108m asking price for the talented England winger.

Dortmund are now reportedly willing to slash the fees and Sancho could go for as little as £82m.

Forward: Harry Kane

Kane made it clear he wants to win more than individual awards and this opened the door for a potential move away from Tottenham.

Spurs are only in the Europa Conference League and are yet to win any silverware in the last decade, and Kane’s recent sentiments seem to indicate he might make a move to another Premier League club.

According to the Guardian, United are willing to leave up to £300m at the mercy of Solskjaer to bolster his squad.

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that Man United icon Paul Scholes has singled out David de Gea for blame following Man United’s Europa League final defeat against Villarreal.

Scholes cited De Gea’s disappointing performance in the shootouts in particular, with the legendary midfielder contending the keeper should have done more.

Both Villarreal and United played out a 1-1 draw in Gdansk, Poland, after regulation time, with neither side finding a winner even after 30 minutes of extra time.

The encounter had to be decided via an epic penalty shootout which saw all outfield players convert their spot-kicks.

Geronimo Rulli was the hero for Villarreal after saving his fellow goalkeeper David De Gea’s spot-kick to put an end to the marathon between the two sides.
