Councillor Peter Brennan was turfed out of the ceremonial role by elected mayor Joe Anderson after several complaints

The lord mayor of Liverpool was sacked today after just two months in the job for sharing a racist video in a private WhatsApp group.

Councillor Peter Brennan was turfed out of the ceremonial role by elected mayor Joe Anderson after several complaints were made about what is reported to be a clip comparing a black person to a monkey.

Mr Anderson said he was ‘shocked and appalled by the content of the video, saying: ‘Racist language and behaviour is inexcusable and unforgivable.’

It was sent on the 14th anniversary of the racist murder of Anthony Walker, which horrified the city and the nation.

It is the latest racism embarrassment for party leader Jeremy Corbyn, who is in the north west today trying to drum up opposition to fracking near Blackpool.

Mr Anderson (pictured with Theresa May in Liverpool in June) said he was ‘shocked and appalled by the content of the video, saying: ‘Racist language and behaviour is inexcusable and unforgivable.’

Mr Anderson said he met with Mr Brennan, the councillor for the Old Swan area in the east of the city this morning and forced him to stand down.

‘The video is completely at odds with my values, the values of Liverpool City Council and all who live and work across the city,’ Mr Anderson said.

‘The hurt that this will have caused to people across the city, including members of my own family is unacceptable from someone who we have given the honour to act as our first citizen.’

The mayor said he had reported Mr Brennan to the Labour Party for investigation.

Anthony Walker, 18, was cut down with an ice-axe in Liverpool in 2005.

He had been walking across a park with his white girlfriend Louise Thompson and his cousin Marcus Binns when he was set upon and murdered.

Two men, Michael Barton and his cousin Paul Taylor, were later jailed for life for the brutal killing.
