Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris suffered a gruesome elbow injury as Tottenham went 1-0 down early on against Brighton .

Lloris was caught out by a long range effort as he dropped the ball at the feet of Neal Maupay for the opener.

But he fell awkwardly as he back-pedalled into his own net, with his left arm awkwardly twisting the wrong way as he landed.

The French goalkeeper visibly screamed in agony and was given oxygen on the field as he was treated for a substantial period of time and stretchered off.

Lloris, Tottenham’s captain, was replaced by Paulo Gazzaniga and give a standing ovation as he was taken from the pitch.

According to BT Sport, he was screaming in agony as he was carried through the tunnel and given extra morphine to counter the pain before being taken to hospital via ambulance.


The incident left Spurs on the back foot on the south coast as they looked to recover from their Champions League thrashing at the hands of Bayern Munich in midweek.

They went 2-0 down after half an hour when Gazzaniga could only deflect the ball into the path of Aaron Connolly.

Lloris was amongst those to rip into his team for their performance as they were beaten 7-2 by the German champions.

“I feel really bad for the fans mainly because we gave up a little bit too easily and the score was even worse,” the 32-year-old said.

“It is a night that affects a lot. Now it’s about character, clearing the mind.

“We need to find a solution to find the consistency that was our strength in the last few years.

“Since the start of the season we have never played at the same intensity for 90 minutes.

“As you see we’re used to playing in a way that demands a lot of energy and focus, and at this level the opponent punishes you when you start to lose easy balls close to the box.

“Today we feel bad for the badge, we feel bad for the fans and now it is to show a reaction on Saturday. This game has become even more important for us.”

Spurs now face being without Lloris for an extended period of time as they wait to discover the full extent of the damage.
