Lara Trump, former President Donald Trump’s daughter-in-law, on Saturday night urged Americans living at the southern border to “arm up” and “get guns” as she railed against President Joe Biden’s immigration policies.

In an appearance on Fox News’ Justice With Judge Jeanine, Trump, who currently works as a contributor for the network, called Biden’s border response “disgraceful.”

“I don’t know what to tell the people that live at the southern border. I guess they better arm up, get guns and be ready, and maybe they’ll have to start taking matters into their own hands,” she said. “It should never happen. These people should never make this dangerous journey here.”

Several users—including Russell Foster, who ran in 2020 to represent Texas’ 4th Congressional District—immediately criticized her remarks. “This is dangerous. The former president’s daughter-in-law is calling for people to shoot immigrants. It’s worse after multiple mass shootings over the last few days in Texas & elsewhere. This could lead to an uptick in hate crimes across the country,” Foster tweeted.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection reported it encountered 178,000 migrants in April, an increase of roughly 5,000 from the previous month. So far this year, the agency has reported 749,600 encounters. The agency reported a total of 458,088 encounters in 2020.

Conservatives have routinely attacked the Biden administration for their alleged failure in curtailing the flow of migrants to the U.S. from Central America.

On Thursday, Republican Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced plans to build a wall on the border during a press conference in Del Rio, despite Biden’s decision to halt all border wall construction.

“President Biden’s open-border policies have led to a humanitarian crisis at our southern border as record levels of illegal immigrants, drugs, and contraband pour into Texas,” Abbott said. “While securing the border is the federal government’s responsibility, Texas will not sit idly by as this crisis grows.”

On Friday, the Biden administration announced that roughly $2 billion in funding for Trump’s border wall will be returned to the Pentagon. “Building a massive wall that spans the entire southern border and costs American taxpayers billions of dollars is not a serious policy solution or responsible use of federal funds,” said the Office of Management and Budget in a statement.

Biden appointed Vice President Kamala Harris to lead his administration’s response to immigration issues at the border in late March. However, the administration has made clear that Harris will assume a diplomatic, rather than managerial role.

Newsweek reached out to the White House for comment. This story will be updated with any response.
