Lagos to enumerate Badagry windstorm, flood victims

Lagos state is set to enumerate victims of a strong windstorm that occurred from about midnight of Sunday 24th during a rainstorm, to early hours of Monday 25th May 2020 at Iragon community, in Badagry Central Local Government Area.

The enumeration which is slated for Tuesday 26th May, 2020, is an endeavour to be undertaken by Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) for those that suffered severe damages to their structures, which includes several affected buildings such as a school, a church, the community town hall and several residential buildings.

Though no lives were lost in the incident, the Commissioner 2, of the Lagos State Civil Service Commission, Hon. Suru Avoseh stated that the incident leftover 100 buildings affected, with over 150 people devastated.

In a statement, LASEMA said these events culminated in the decision and directive by the DG/CEO LASEMA, Dr Olufemi Oke–Osanyintolu, to conduct a comprehensive enumeration of the entire affected community on Tuesday 26th May, 2020, while corroborating the incident with a “Preliminary Report on Extreme weather that affected Persons within Badagry Local Council.

“The heavy downpour of Sunday May 24th 2020 has caused considerable damage to at least 30 households in the Iragon-Iragbo Communities within Badagry.

“A number of homes have totally or partially collapsed, while others had their roofs blown off by the heavy winds. We can confirm for example that the prototype school in the community, St Patrick’s Primary school has suffered extensive damage.

“We have dispatched a team to conduct an enumeration of damaged properties and displaced persons particularly elderly, women and children within the locality. Updates will follow in due course”.
