The Duchess of Cambridge has proven she’s an animal-lover time and again. From her own new puppy to the family’s beloved late dog Lupo to her childhood farm animals, the Duchess is never one to shy away from friends of a different species. However, it is a bit of a surprise that insects are on this list of favorable animals. Yesterday, the Duchess revealed that she’s picked up a peculiar hobby—beekeeping.

Kate visited London’s Natural History Museum to hear about the Museum’s Urban Nature Project, which informs UK citizens about the importance of wildlife in cities. During her visit, the Duchess joined local schoolchildren in a few nature activities, including a “spider-making” arts and crafts project and an interactive story-telling exercise. She also brought her own special gift for the kids, fresh honey from the Anmer Hall beehives.

“This came specially from my beehive,” the Duchess told the schoolchildren. She noted that her apiary is located at Anmer Hall, the Cambridges’ country home and where they spent much of the pandemic.

“Would you like to try some?” Kate asked the children, offering the pot of honey. “I’ve got one spoon each.”

She continued, asking the children to make observations about the honey: “See if it tastes the same as at home. Does it taste like honey from the shops? Does it taste like flowers?”

“Every time you see a bee; say thank you so much because they make delicious honey,” she told the kids.

Kate is not the only Middleton to engage in beekeeping. Her brother, James Middleton, has been a beekeeper for over a decade. Last year, he wrote an essay about the hobby, sharing the he now has half a million bees in eight hives at Bucklebury Manor in Berkshire. His first beehive was a gift from his sisters, Kate and Pippa Middleton.
