Retired midfielder and former Juventus playmaker Andrea Pirlo has been appointed the new Juventus manager barely hours after Maurizio Sarri’s sack.

Pirlo’s appointment comes only 10 days after he got the job as the U23 manager for the Serie A giants.

The 41-year old will take over at the Juventus stadium until the end of the 2021/2022 season.

Juventus released a statement confirming Pirlo’s appointment, adding that the decision was “based on the belief that Pirlo has what it takes to lead from his debut on the bench, an expert and talented squad to pursue new success”.

A number of big names were rumored to be in line for the job including ex-Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino and Lazio boss Simeone Inzaghi.

Pirlo ended his European football career at Juventus where he played between 2011 and 2015, winning four Serie A titles in the process.

He was particularly renown for his great eye in midfield and superb free-kick ability.

Considered one of the smartest players of his generation, Pirlo won 116 caps for Italy and was part of the squad which won the World Cup in 2006. He retired in 2017 after a short stint in the MLS with New York City FC.

Legit.ng earlier reported that Juventus have parted ways with manager Maurizio Sarri barely 24 hours after the Serie A champions were bundled out the Champions League last 16 by French side Lyon.

The former Chelsea boss was unable to inspire his side to a comeback in the Champions League last 16 second leg where they came in training 1-0.

Despite a Cristiano Ronaldo brace, the Italian giants were knocked out by the away goal rule, further piling pressure on Sarri.
