Judy Murray and Kim Sears’ support isn’t enough to save Andy

Judy Murray and Kim Sears’ support wasn’t enough to save Andy Murray from being knocked out of the men’s doubles this afternoon, with his hopes now resting on a dream pairing with Serena Williams this evening.

The former world No 1 was also being supported by celebrities including Gareth Southgate and Sir Mo Farah who watched from the royal box as his dream return to SW19 ended in tatters.

Wife Kim cheered on her husband as he bid for a fairytale return to Wimbledon following a year out after hip surgery. But despite the support, Murray ended up crashing out after four sets.

But the 32-year-old will have another chance at success later today as he takes on Andreas Mies and Alexa Guarachi in the mixed doubles alongside 23-time Grand Slam winner Serena Williams.

The pair had been supposed to take to Centre Court yesterday but were rescheduled for this evening after teenage sensation Coco Gauff’s epic comeback bumped them off the fixture list.

Wimbledon’s sixth day has seen Murray compete in his first major tournament since completing a successful hip operation.

He and Williams will be watched by a string of sporting legends who have flocked to the All England Lawns Tennis Club, including Lord Sebastian Coe and Sir Chris Hoy.

A forecaster said: ‘Today we’ve got cloud and rain across central UK which will be gradually pushing its way south.

‘There’s a change of a few spots of rain reaching Wimbledon by the end of the day and for Pride it looks like it should be fine, bright and sunny weather with a few spots of rain later.’

Sir Mo said that he and his wife Tania are relishing ‘some time away from the kids’ and joked: ‘We are both just excited to be away from the kids – it’s just nice to have a little break, just the two of us.’

Former Wimbledon women’s champions Martina Navratilova and Billie Jean King greeted each other with a fist bump.

The ex-world number 1s’ appearance in SW19 came after both women were thrust back into the spotlight following a series of public remarks.

And more recently, King defended the US women’s football team after their came under fire for ‘rubbing in’ their thumping 13-0 victory over Thailand in the World Cup.
