JKT Tanzania 2-3 Namungo FC: Visitors seal their place in Tanzania Cup quarter-finals

Rhino Rangers, Biashara United, Mwadui FC, Azam FC, Yanga SC, Simba SC, and Dodoma Jiji FC are the other teams in the last eight

Namungo FC survived a late rally from JKT Tanzania to win 3-2 and make it to the quarter-finals of the Tanzania Cup on Sunday.

Reliants Lusajo scored a hat-trick or the visitors with Musa Said and Najim Magulu scoring for the hosts.

Namungo reached the final last season where they lost to 2-1 to Simba SC, and were aiming to advance from the Round of 16 after struggling in the Tanzania Mainland League.

For JKT, this was an opportunity to challenge for the game well and needed just 23 minutes to get their first goal. Goalkeeper Mrisho Musa fumbled a seemingly harmless ball from Fredy Tangalo, it fell to Lusajo who had no problems in tapping the ball into an empty net.

Four minutes later, the forward doubled the advantage after Monday George was dispossessed by Stephen Sey and he passed the ball to Lusajo, who kept his cool to complete his brace.

The two goals were a wake-up call for the hosts who struggled to get the ball in scoring positions. For Namungo, they played without tension as they were not under pressure having scored two early goals.

Two minutes to the half-break, Lusajo got his third of the game, when a long ball from the goalkeeper was flicked by Adam Salamba to the forward, who looped the ball past Musa to make it 3-0 in the first half.

After the break, the hosts came back strong, hoping to reduce the deficit and get back into the game.

However, beating their opponent’s defenders was a tall order. They got a lifeline in the 70th minute when Said managed to beat the defenders and the goalkeeper.

In the 88th minute, JKT got their second goal when the ball was handled in the danger zone by Jaffari Mohamed and the referee pointed to the penalty spot.

Magulu sent goalkeeper Johnathan Nahimana the wrong way to score his fourth of the campaign. But the equalizer was not coming and Namungo made it to the last eight.

Rhino Rangers, Biashara United, Mwadui FC, Azam FC, Yanga SC, Simba SC, and Dodoma Jiji FC are the other teams in the quarter-finals.
