In what will be annoying to the presidency and the ruling All Progressives Congress, Junaid Mohammed, has backed some of the statement issued by Matthew Kukah.

The Second Republic lawmaker affirmed that the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Matthew Kukah, was right to say that the PresidentMuhammadu Buhari had been promoting nepotism in his appointments.

However, he claimed that Kukah’s analysis was not right, The Punch reports.

According to him, Kukah’s claim that the military would have taken over if it was a southern president acting the way Buhari did was not factual.

Mohammed insisted there would not have been a coup if it was a southern president

He said:

“Over 99 per cent of the appointments Buhari made were not based on merit.”

Recall that Legit.ng reported that with Kukah’s homily still courting a ripple of controversy, the Northern Elders’ Forum (NEF) on Thursday, January 14, warned against creating religious tension in the country.

Speaking through its spokesperson Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, the forum said though it would not like to react directly to Kukah’s statement, “nothing on the ground is threatening Muslims or Christians.”

Baba-Ahmed, however, said leaders must be careful of what they say so that they do not plunge the country into a religious rift.

Legit.ng also reported that in a swift response to the threats asking Bishop Kukah to apologise or “quickly and quietly leave” Sokoto state, the presidency on Wednesday night, January 13, spoke in defence of the respected cleric.

A media aide to President Muhammadu Buhari, Garba Shehu, said Kukah “has the right” to freedom of speech, among other protection under the law.
