Idaho is under ‘widespread’ flu alert – Idaho Mountain Express and Guide

The Centers for Disease Control issued a “widespread” flu alert to 22 states this week, and Idaho is on the list.     That means flu activity has been reported in all regions of the state.

Around 4 percent of emergency department visits in Idaho stemmed from influenza-type illnesses this week, the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare reported, and 66 percent of specimens evaluated for influenza tested positive for the B/Victoria strain.     B/Victoria—which tends to affect children—usually circulates in the spring, but it’s the main driver of influenza across the U.S. right now. Nationwide, 1,300 people have already died this flu season, and 23,000 have been hospitalized, according to the CDC.
According to the DC, it can often be tricky to determining if you have a common cold or the flu. The three main indicators of flu are a rapid onset of high fever (between 102 and 104 degrees), extreme fatigue and joint pain.     The CDC is encouraging those who may not have yet had a flu vaccine this season to do so.     “Flu vaccine prevents millions of illnesses, flu-related doctor’s visits and tens of thousands of hospitalizations each year,” its website states.
