The Bianconeri had Cristiano Ronaldo and Matthijs de Ligt pass fitness tests, as only Giorgio Chiellini was a long-term absentee, but needed a win to recapture the top spot after Inter’s win on Saturday. Stefano Pioli’s men missed Mateo Musacchio, Samu Castillejo and Fabio Borini, but Suso returned after a hip issue.
The last time Milan beat Juventus in Turin in the league was back in 2011, when Gennaro Gattuso scored the only goal.
Gigio Donnarumma made the first save of the match on 14 minutes, using his legs to parry from former teammate Gonzalo Higuain at the near post.
At the other end, Krzysztof Piatek had a free header and couldn’t keep it on target in quite a bad miss. However, Wojciech Szczesny was called into a spectacular fingertip save, as Andrea Conti pulled back for Lucas Paqueta’s looping header, acrobatically pushed out of the top corner.
Federico Bernardeschi cut inside from the right to curl a left-footed finish just over, but again Szczesny had to make a save, getting down to beat away a Theo Hernandez thunderbolt from distance.
On the stroke of half-time, his gloves were stung at the near post by Piatek from a tight angle.
