Here’s why some people have a dessert craving even after feeling full! – Times of India

Sample this. You have had a heavy dinner or a very appetizing buffet to devour and then you see a plate of your favourite dessert coming your way. Even though you feel “full” and feel like there is no possible way for another morsel of food to go in your stomach, you always make an exception for dessert. This happens at parties, dinners, and weddings and in a high predicament, sums up the festive binge sessions! If you are nodding your head in agreement, this is for you.

No matter how much food you stuff in, there always seems to be a tiny inch of room available for sweets. However, this doesn’t mean that there is a problem with your stomach. A lot of people go through this and as it turns out, there is a scientific explanation behind this happening.
Here’s why
Human stomach is designed as a flexible organ and have the tendency to stretch, expand or contract to make space for food to come in. Combined with the pressure present inside the stomach walls and the secretion of digestive juices, this induces the feeling of fullness whenever we eat. However, when you eat something sweet, this reaction goes for a toss.
When you eat something sweet, it releases a hormone, which tricks the body into thinking that it is not actually full. At the same time, the sugar and the glucose levels present in the food further stimulate a reflex reaction which triggers your stomach walls to expand and fit in more food. The brain then sends out a message which relaxes some of your muscles in the stomach wall and makes you capable of eating more food than you actually thought. Thereby, making you go for a serving of your favourite pastry at the table.
There is also another explanation for this. Even though you tend to eat foods from varying groups, it can so happen that your senses can get bored and find all that food less appealing and they will satisfy you in the same way. This is what experts call ‘dessert stomach’. When you go in for a sugar fix, it can refresh the digestive system and at the same time override satiety hormones that were full before.
But, be carefulHowever, that just doesn’t mean you go overboard. Apart from adding to your sugar levels, excessive sweet consumption can also give you a sugar rush and also possibly cause a load of other health problems. If you ever face a situation like this, experts say that it is best to stick to a bite-sized dessert to satiate your sweet cravings. This way, you won’t actually be harming your gut or digestion and at the same time, kickstart the dessert expansion phenomenon.
You can also choose to opt for some healthier sweets or eat something laden less with artificial sugars. The key is to find the right balance between how much sweet to eat and when.
