The Osun State Governor, Gboyega Oyetola, has been charged to speed up work on all the panels his administration inaugurated in the last two years as Osun governor.

Also, the state governor was charged to also give the people of Osun value for the public funds invested in these panels by availing them with the details of actions and recommendations made by them.

Making this call in Osogbo, a security expert and public commentator, Akin Adeyi explained that two major administrative panels of enquiry were established by the governor which were charged to look into certain separate gross acts of indiscipline and fraudulent practices allegedly committed by some government and political functionaries against the state.

He opined that, “It is a government tradition that panels, after they have gathered and examined all available details, will feed the governor back within a given time limit.

“The governor in turn will implement and announce decisions taken in respect of the matter. It is called feedback in administration.”

Adeyi recalled that in April, 2020, the Osun State Government announced that it has commenced investigation into allegation that some bags of rice distributed to the people as palliative to cushion the effect of COVID-19 lockdown in the state were adulterated.

In his words, ”Funke Egbemode, the Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, in a statement had said the government had received complaints that some of the distributed bags of rice might not have met the expected quality.

“Egbemode, however, said the government was pained by the development and had immediately begun investigation in order to establish the source of the few bags of rice that were alleged of low quality.

“She said Governor Oyetola was particularly pained by the development.”

Adeyi revealed that the Commissioner had stated that the state government had as part of the investigations invited all suppliers and vendors from whom the relief materials were purchased, for questioning in order to identify the source of the problem.

Adeyi explained that according to the Commissioner, “the state government promised the citizens that upon unraveling what went wrong, it will take necessary punitive measures against the erring supplier(s) and vendor(s), including de-listing such vendor from the government’s directory and even proclaiming a disclaimer to that effect.

“However, as of April 2021, precisely one year after the government promise, not one word on the rice matter had been heard again from the government or anybody.”

The security expert observed that the most recent is when the state government announced that it had constituted a disciplinary committee to look into Comrade Amitolu Shittu’s myriad of allegations against the governor, his government and certain senior political appointees.

The public commentator recalled that Shittu had criticised and condemned in strong terms some of the critical decisions of the governor.

He stated that the critique was particular on the appointment of the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Mr. Charles Akinola and the Security Adviser to the Governor, Mrs. Abiodun Ige adding that so far, nothing has been heard on the matter from the government.

While wondering if the results from the panel had been swept under the carpet, he observed that it was in a similar manner that Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola had started his administration.

“Aregbesola in his eight years in office as governor of the state inaugurated several committees and panels than any other state governor in Nigeria. Whereas reports of activities and recommendations from any of these panels never saw the light of the day. This was in spite of the huge public funds said to have been spent on them.

“I want Governor Oyetola to expedite action on the issues raised earlier, that of the poisoned rice and Amitolu’s allegations, so that his administration will not be seen as the continuation of Aregbesola in cover up of fraud, crimes and acts of indiscipline.”
