The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Friday it has found a common chemical culprit in patients with vaping-related illnesses. The CDC said it extracted fluid from the lungs of 29 patients with vaping-related illnesses across 10 states. Vitamin E acetate was the only substance found in all 29 samples. “It’s one thing when you swallow vitamin E or you put the oil on your skin. It’s another thing entirely if it’s in your lungs, and it looks like there was actually like a chemical burn type of injury there,” said Dr. Jan LaPook, CBS News chief medical correspondent. Vitamin E acetate has recently been found in vaping fluid, especially in black market products.New York’s state public health lab discovered the compound in samples of vaping products provided by patients, sometimes making up more than half of the liquid in vaping cartridges. However, officials said they can’t rule out other toxic substances and it may take animal testing to prove vitamin E acetate causes lung damage.”They found the vitamin E acetate in the lung, but there could be something else going on in the lung, also,” LaPook said.
