Greggs is working on a new vegan range following the success of its meat-free sausage roll.

Chief executive Roger Whiteside revealed the news this morning, claiming demand for the vegan sausage roll demonstrated customers wanted a different option.

He declined to reveal the extent of the range, which could even include ‘vegan steak bakes’, but the firm has already announced it was aiming to produce a vegan doughnut.

He didn’t reveal what the range would include, but it is likely that it will include a vegan steak bake and vegan doughnut

Greggs has come a long way since its beginnings as a family bakery and is now one of the leading food chains in the UK that offers everything from coffee to pizza.

Speaking on LBC radio, Mr Whiteside said the company was also working on a ‘special product’ but would not reveal what it was because it would ‘be giving away everything to our competitors’.

He added: ‘But I will say we are working away at seeing if we can come up with a vegan version of all our top-selling lines. Obviously people want a vegan option.

‘If we can succeed in doing that and produce something that tastes just as good as the meat version, then that will sell very successfully. That’s what’s been shown with the vegan sausage roll.’

Mr Whiteside said going into the vegan market was ‘in keeping with what our customers want to consume’.

He added Greggs was now number three in the UK market for selling coffee while it was only behind Tesco in selling sandwiches.

Bosses previously announced Greggs was looking to enter the late-night food market by keeping some stores open until 9pm.

The firm also revealed its profits were up by more than 50 per cent to £40.6million in the first six months of the year, with overall sales also up 10.5 per cent over the same period.
