Giampaolo: Too early for details

Marco Giampaolo said Milan are “working on macro-principles right now, then we need to get into the details” ahead of their Benfica match.

The Rossoneri continue their International Champions Cup campaign in America by taking on Benfica, but Patrick Cutrone has already flown back to Italy for advanced negotiations with Wolverhampton Wanderers.

“I have always protested against having the transfer window open all the way up to the start of the season. I’ve never understood it and I never will,” said the Coach in his Press conference.

“Nobody cares about the work we tacticians have to do, because the sport is now a business in total. My job becomes increasingly difficult, but I will carry on with it as long as I feel the passion.”

Milan players have made appreciative comments about the work done with Giampaolo in training, as he changed the system to 4-3-1-2, but also focused more on passing, possession and being proactive.

“We are working on macro-principles right now, then we need to get into the details. The games we play in this pre-season tour will give us information on what we need to go into more deeply.

“I know where we want to go to reach my vision, mentality and attitude, so I realise there’s a lot of work ahead of us. Time is not on our side and we are missing several key figures at the moment, so I thank Fabio Borini for being available to try a new midfield role.

“It’s a long construction process, but we have laid down the blueprint. We must all share an idea that can take us towards important results together.”

Milan lost their International Champions Cup opener to Bayern Munich, but Giampaolo was reassured by the performance.

“I liked the fact they played with faith, trying to replicate the concepts we’ve discussed in training. I know that I am under the spotlight every day and have to earn credit with these players and everyone else around me. You never stop earning people’s faith in you when you’re in this profession.

“The club has put me in the best condition to work, so I know it’s up to me to get it done now.”
