It is understood Fernandez sparked anger and fury after photos he allegedly took selfies next to Maradona’s body went viral online.

One of the photos showed the funeral attendant making a thumbs-up gesture, with one of the hands touching the legendary footballer’s forehead.

In a string of other images taken next to the open casket, Fernandez was in the company of a young man said to be his son and another yet to be identified colleague.

In his defence, Fernandez told an Argentine radio station the photos were taken by his son, asking for forgiveness over the “disrespectful” and “offensive” actions.

“It was something instantaneous. I’d just raised my head and my son did it like any kid of 18,” talkSPORT quoted him saying.

“I ask for everyone’s forgiveness. I’ve worked for Maradona’s father and his brother-in-law. I’ve been close to Diego while he was alive. I would never have disrespected him while he was alive because he was my idol and it was not my intention after he died,” he added.

He further divulged he had lost his job with Sepelios Pinier Funeral Home that had been contracted to help prepare Maradona’s body.

Since his demise on Wednesday, November 25, thousands of fans have been taking to the streets to pay tribute to the World Cup winner who succumbed to a heart attack.

The mourners are reported to have jostled to get a glimpse of the football icon’s coffin.
