French govt bans use of hydroxychloroquine in treating COVID-19 patients

The French government on Wednesday banned doctors from administering hydroxychloroquine in treating patients with COVID-19 in the country.

The ban was implemented when the French government canceled a decree allowing hospitals, doctors to administer hydroxychloroquine on patients, Reuters reports.

The announcement which was made by the France Ministry of Health’s official bulletin said the ban takes immediate effect.

It followed advice by French advisory bodies stressing that the drug was dangerous.

Recall that the World Health Organisation had on Monday suspended its solidarity trial of hydroxychloroquine for treating COVID-19 patients.

France had decided at the end of March to allow the use of hydroxychloroquine, which in addition to malaria was approved for treating lupus and rheumatoid arthritis.

Reports in Britain had it that hydroxychloroquine had increased death rates and irregular heartbeats of COVID-19 patients.

Also, the United States, US, President, Donald Trump had pushed for hydroxychloroquine in recent months as a possible COVID-19 treatment.

But so far, no vaccine or treatment has yet been approved to treat COVID-19.
