Former Punjab DGP Dinkar Gupta appointed new Director General of NIA

NEW DELHI: The Centre on Thursday appointed former Punjab DGP Dinkar

, an IPS officer of 1987 batch, as the Director General of National Investigation Agency (NIA).

Gupta, who was dropped as the state police chief in October 2021 by the erstwhile Congress government led by Charanjit

Singh Channi

, will be the first full-time DG of NIA ever since former NIA chief Y C Modi retired on May 31, 2021. CRPF DG Kuldiep Singh was holding additional charge as DG, NIA since Modi’s exit.

Gupta — who was posted as chairman of Punjab Police Housing Corporation (PPHC) after being replaced by Iqbal Preet Singh Sahota — will hold the NIA DG’s post till March 31, 2024, the date of his superannuation, or until further orders of the government, whichever is earlier.

, special director in the Intelligence Bureau, was appointed as special secretary (internal security) in the ministry of home affairs. He succeeds V S K Kaumudi, who has shifted to the Cabinet secretariat as secretary(security). Das, a 1987-batch IPS officer of the Chhattisgarh cadre, has been appointed to the post till November 30, 2024, the date of his superannuation, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

Incidentally, the extended tenure of both IB chief Aravinda Kumar and RAW chief Samant Goel is due to end on June 30, 2022.
