Fonseca: 'Roma will improve'

Paulo Fonseca was pleased with Amadou Diawara’s Roma debut, even if “we have much to improve in his playing style.”

The Giallorossi beat Serie C side Gubbio 3-0 this evening with goals from Javier Pastore, Federico Fazio and Mirko Antonucci.

“We knew it was going to be a tough game after a week of hard physical work in fitness training, but I saw a good response. We’re just at the beginning,” the Coach told Roma TV.

“I’d say we saw some of the principles of football. We must improve on some things, such as the intensity in defence and the pace of the movements in possession.

“Diawara has only been training with us for a few days and we tried to explain what he should do. His first game was satisfactory, but we have much to improve in his playing style.

“We were up against an opponent that was better organised than the others we’ve faced so far in pre-season and were surprised by their tactical intelligence. They allowed us very little space, so we had to play down the flanks.

“I’m glad we were able to keep the ball for more, but it’s important to show patience when seeking spaces. It’s early days and the team will improve a lot by the start of the season.”
