Ekdal makes homosexual plea

Sampdoria midfielder Albin Ekdal has called on the world of football to finally ‘welcome’ gay players.

There are no openly-homosexual men’s footballers currently plying their trade in Europe’s top divisions, and Ekdal believes the time has come for the taboo to be laid to rest.

“No homosexual men play football, they say. How did we let it come to this?” the Sweden international told Sportbladet.

“My name is Albin Ekdal and I have played football in two of the biggest Leagues in the world.

“I have participated in both the European Championship and the World Cup, but I have still never stood on the same pitch as an openly homosexual player.

“The issue can’t be shown more clearly than that. Elite football pushes away homosexuals – or puts pressure on boys to be quiet about something as natural as who they love.

“We must support the boy who is right now thinking about quitting not to get mocked, who might have heard the word ‘faggot’ be used as a form of abuse in the dressing room.

“Because it’s not the individual boy’s responsibility to date. It’s mine, yours and everyone else’s duty to make sure that it doesn’t require courage, that it should be easy and fun to tell someone that you are in love.

“I can’t do anything else than welcome everyone into the footballing world, and you can’t either.

“But if we do it all together, at every stand, every bus stop, every away game and in every dressing room then we soon won’t have this problem anymore.”
